Blog #158 Celebrating Happy Earth Day!
Happy Earth Day!
Earth Day is every April 22nd and is a powerful opportunity to appreciate and remember that we are all stewards of our amazing home, planet Earth.
When I was in high school for the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, we picked up trash at our local beaches and in and around our own neighborhoods and town as well. We created an organic garden at school and made a commitment to save rain water and use less paper and plastic where ever possible.
There are so many things we can do each and every day to help.
In 1970, because there was no EPA, no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act, there were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. And it worked!!!
Earth Day journey:
1970 Earth Day: 20 million people participated in massive rallies from coast to coast to demonstrate for healthy sustainable environment. Earth Day Founders created an 85 person staff to promote events and teach-ins across the country.
1990 Earth Day: 200 million people in 141 countries assembled to catalyze policies of worldwide recycling.
2000 Earth Day: A huge push to organize global warming education and clean energy measures worldwide via the Internet.
2010 Earth Day: over 75, 000 Global Partners in 192 countries launched the world's largest environmental service project, a billion acts of green and the canopy project for long-term efforts to combat global climate change.
2025 Earth Day: now is the time for each of us to do our part to preserve and protect this place we all call home. A healthy planet is not an option, it is a necessity. Everyone can change something for the better, whether at home, at a place of business or any place we visit or recreate.
Easy Earth Day Resolutions
Who says New Year's is the only time for resolutions? Earth Day is every April 22nd and it's a perfect occasion to adopt new habits for the greater good of our Sweet Planet Earth
Give up Plastic Straws:
We can help save Earth by Saving water, saving energy, and minimizing waste by giving up plastic straws. Americans alone uses $500 million straws every single day, far too many for those straws to end up in our beaches and oceans where they are harmful to marine life. If you prefer a straw invest in reusable bamboo or stainless steel straws and stash a few in your desk at work or in the glove compartment in your car.
Reduce Food Waste:
There is an estimated 30 to 40% of food in the United States that just gets thrown away. Plan out meals for the week and know exactly what you need. You can also reduce food waste by ensuring that you eat your leftovers and freeze anything that you're not able to use in time, like extra fruit, leafy greens; and cut them up and store in the freezer ready to blend in a smoothie. Create a compost bin.
Commit to Canvas:
Many of us in California are getting accustomed to the plastic bags ban that passed in 2016. However, you're likely to still pay $0.10 for a bag more than a few times in the past year, we've all been there. Now it's time to really commit to our Canvas Bag. Keep canvas or cloth bags in the trunk of your car so that you're always ready, whether it is grocery store, farmers market or even the mall.
Ditch Paper Towels:
This one might seem a little daunting to some people but it isn't hard as it may seem. Instead of grabbing for the paper towel, use cloth towels to dry your hands and keep your old rags and sponges handy for cleanups and spills.
Start a Home Garden:
It is no secret that most of us love fresh food and vegetables and flowers which is why you may choose to grow a Home Garden. It is not only visually appealing but it's good for the environment too by choosing to grow plants that are native to your area and conserving water preserving biodiversity and creating healthy habitat for birds, butterflies, insects and other small animals. Not only will these changes make an environmental impact, but many of them can have a positive health and financial impact as well.
Few more tips:
When taking a shower and letting the water warm up, have a bucket or big pitcher and save the water to water your potted plants around the house.
Have a rain saving barrel outside to collect rain water.
Plant flowers and milkweed in your garden to help the pollinators and for all of us to thrive
This Earth Day, take a moment and make a conscious decision to take one more step to make this an even healthier more sustainable world to live in.
